PC-Alert! Overview

The PC-Alert! internet public alerting system provides a standard interface that lets alerting authorities create and post alerts to their local web sites. Users who choose to monitor those alerting web sites can then receive alerting information within minutes of it being posted.

PC-Alert! actually consists of two seperate programs as follows:

1) PC-Alert! Viewer:
The Viewer is a small program that members of the public can download and install on their Windows home PC completely free of charge. Once installed, the Viewer program remains hidden in the system tray situated in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. The Viewer is automatically set to check for alerts every five minutes. When an alert is received, the Viewer popup window is displayed and the computer sound system is beeped.

Typically, public alerts can be received and viewed within five minute of the alert being published to an alerting web site.

The Viewer window contains basic alerting information such as a description of the alert and the recommended action to be taken. Clicking the FULL REPORT button displays further alerting information including pictures, images and maps etc. via a standard web page in the internet browser already installed on nearly all home computers.

Before the program can be used, the user must supply basic 'setup' information.

2) PC-Alert! Admin:
The Admin program is used by the Alerting Authority to create and post alerts to their local alerting web site.

The steps required to set up an alert:

Step a)
The alerting authority administrator creates the alert using the PC-Alert! Admin program and posts it on their alerting web site.

Step b)
The PC-Alert! Viewer program automatically detects the alert, downloads the information and displays it on the user's computer.

These steps are summarized in the diagram below.
